History of WETCC
Founded in 1997 by the White Earth Tribal Council, White Earth Tribal and Community College (WETCC) was created to provide accessible, culturally grounded higher education for the White Earth Nation and surrounding communities. What began in a small two-room building in downtown Mahnomen with 14 students has grown into a thriving tribal college dedicated to student success, cultural preservation, and community impact.
WETCC became a nonprofit tribally controlled college in 1998 and celebrated its first graduating class in 2000. The college earned full accreditation through the Higher Learning Commission in 2008 and has continued to expand its programs, facilities, and services to meet the evolving needs of students and the region.
Today, WETCC’s campus at 2250 College Road includes modern learning spaces, the Drum Hall, student support services, and programs rooted in Anishinaabe values, language, and community. Guided by an independent Board of Trustees, WETCC remains committed to providing quality education, strengthening cultural identity, and preparing students for meaningful careers, leadership, and lifelong learning.
